PADDY CASEY'S INTERVIEW WITH CHARLESTON GAZETTE
by Bill Lynch [Charleston Gazette] Over the phone, Irish singer/songwriter Paddy Casey is shy and reserved. The connection overseas to Dublin isn't particularly good. Ireland is a long way from Charleston, where he appears Sunday on "Mountain Stage, but he tries to muddle through. Casey has a soft, melodic voice. It doesn't carry well over the transatlantic line, but comes through like the sweetest soul on his album, "Addicted to Company.' "My favorite singers have always been soul singers, he said. "I've always liked black singers. I've always loved the rawness and the passion in the vocals maybe.' Casey came to his soul-inspired Irish pop through the unlikely conduit of the artist again known as Prince. "I got started with music listening to Prince. He used a lot of the older music. It sort of led me to look into the back end and where he came from musically. I followed from there.' Listening to old albums by Otis Redding, Curtis Mayfield and Stevie Wonder led him along his path, which blends a very distinctive Motown-influenced soul with Irish folk and rock. He wrote and sang songs, busked the streets of Dublin and Galway and was discovered at the International Bar by Sony records. Success wasn't exactly overnight - at least, not in the U.S. Nearly 10 years ago, he came to the United States for the first time. He toured the country and opened for bands like REM and The Pretenders. One of his songs was featured on the television show "Dawson's Creek, but it wasn't entirely successful. American radio didn't want much to do with him. "Nobody knew who I was, Casey said. Back home in Ireland, his star was rising. His second album was certified platinum 11 times, selling more than 165,000 - a remarkable feat in a country with a population of about four and a half million people. He won back-to-back Meteor awards, Ireland's equivalent of the Grammy. He garnered rave reviews, but he wanted to make some sort of name in the land that helped inspire his music. He couldn't stay away. He says, minus the airports, he likes coming to America. "I like the big mix-up, you know? Different kinds of people all together. It's not the same thing over in Ireland. I mean, there's no animosity, but the black community, the Asian community tends to stick to themselves. They're just separate.' For Casey's latest album, "Addicted to Company, he had one foot at home and another foot planted firmly in America. Much of it was recorded in Los Angeles, but some of it was mixed in Dublin. "There were just a couple of songs that didn't feel like they were working in the studio, he said. "I was banging my head against the wall. I thought if I just had to get back to the simplicity of my home, it might work out more naturally.' There was more to it than a creative block. He'd been in L.A. for almost six months. "I was living in a hotel, which is kind of crappy to be honest with you. I guess I was a little bit homesick.' America likes Paddy Casey more these days. "Addicted to Company' has generated a bit more buzz than his last American offering. The song is being featured on VH-1 and some of the MTV channels. Commercial radio seems to be warming up to it. "This time around, I'm getting loads of radio, he said. "I got the Letterman show. That was brilliant. It was great.' You may be familiar with the Playstation "SingStar" game, which allows users to sing with a backing track and score points according to their timing / pitch. SingStar Vol. 2 will soon be released for Playstation 3 and Sony Computer Entertainment Europe have made additional tracks available for download via its online store, accessible via PS3 and PSP consoles. SCEE have licensed recordings (with lead vocals lowered in the mix) and in most cases also the corresponding music video in order for these to be made available in the form of downloadable SingStar tracks. Each download purchased will feature the audio and video associated with the track, with the various game-play elements incorporated such as lyrics and a timing guide. Two of Paddy s tracks, Saints and Sinners and Whatever Gets You True, have been made available to buy via this online store. There are two online spaces for SingStar: 1. http://www.singstargame.com/en-ie/ 2. My SingStar Online If you register at singstargame.com you can create a profile for yourself, very similar to profiles in the SingStar community on PS3. Once you have this profile, you can upload video-clip performances and these can be shared with other visitors to singstargame.com. These performances are 60secs in duration, no bigger than 50mb and have to be based on a track currently featured on SingStar (PS2 or PS3). The two Paddy Casey tracks are there already so people can upload their versions NOW. The SingStar community on PS3 is accessed via the SingStar Blu Ray disc and requires a PS3 and a PSN account and broadband connection. |
